Millet Idli/Dosa Batter

Servings- 1 bowl

  • Varagu – 1 cup 
  • Urad dal – 2 tbsp 
  • Methi – 1 tsp
  • Fruit salt / eno / baking soda – ¼ tsp 
  • Salt – to taste 

Preparation Method 

  • Soak millet, urad dal, and methi is a bowl of water for 4-5 hours.
  • Grind the soaked mixture along with the required water to make a smooth thick paste.
  • If grinding in a mixie jar, ensure it does not heat up too much.
  • Transfer the batter into a bowl add salt and baking soda.
  • Mix well and allow the batter to ferment in a warm place for 6-8 hrs 
  • Voila! Your healthy batter is ready and lasts for more than a week.

Millet Idli 


Prep Time- 10 mins

Cooking time – 10 mins

  • To make idli’s grease the idli plate with oil.
  • Pour batter into the idli plates and steam for 10- 15 mins.
  • Let them cool and remove them carefully with a spoon.
  • Idlis taste best when the batter is fresh.

Millet Dosa  


Prep Time- 5 mins

Cooking time – 10 mins|


  • Take the required amount of millet batter and a little water to make a slightly thinner mix.
  • Add a little salt and mix well.
  • Heat a dosa tava with a little oil.
  • Pour batter and spread it into a thin circle.
  • Cook for 2 mins 
  • Flip on to the other side and cook for another 2 mins.
  • Remove from Tava, top it with ghee, and serve hot.
